Stop Smoking, Drinking & Procrastinating
Start Exercising, Dieting & Studying
Form Healthy HabitsWhen we think of starting a diet, exercising, studying, asking for a promotion, or talking through a relationship problem, it can often feel as if it requires a Herculean effort to begin.
We can tell ourselves that it is too difficult, that we need to wait for the right circumstances, or we just need a little bit more confidence before beginning. When we procrastinate like this, we are basing our decision not to act on the most satisfying feeling in the moment, and we avoid dealing with the discomfort of acting. When we want to form habits and behaviours its important to recognise what feelings and thoughts we are paying attention to. Stop Unhealthy HabitsWhen we avoid dealing with our emotions too often or when the feeling becomes too difficult to handle, however, we can also adopt unhealthy methods to cope like drinking, smoking or getting angry.
This can lead to addiction, but it is not an addiction to the substance or behaviour, but an addiction to the feeling that we cannot access through healthy means. Smoking might make it easier to relieve boredom or to relax. Drinking might disinhibit mental processes that make it easier to relax or interact socially. These behaviours are attempts to regain control over our body when we lack the skill to do so ourselves. |
Effects of AvoidanceWhen we avoid anxiety, its likely to present itself in other ways (e.g. smoking, over-drinking, anger, etc.) that can have a negative impact on our health.
The greatest impediment avoidance presents, however, is what it stops us from achieving. The longer we avoid things, the more we put off success. Other areas unnecessary habits can effect include our relationships with friends and family, and our aptitude to work and find joy in everyday life. Treating AvoidanceWhenever we want to start or stop behaving a certain way, it can be necessary to address the underlying anxiety that contributes to our decision to act the way we do.
Our aim is to identify why a behaviour is taking place, how the decision to behave is made, and to work on solutions that enhance our ability to make healthier decisions. Through clinical hypnosis, the therapist may suggest new ways to pay attention to thoughts and feelings and when to do so, how to assess what we control and what we don't, or how to determine what we're responsible for and what we aren't. |
