Anxiety
What is Anxiety?Anxiety is the most common mental illness in our community. This is largely the result of our ineffective coping mechanisms that have not been upgraded to suit our fast paced society.
Higher workloads, complicated standards of living, globalisation, cultural and ideological conflict and digitisation have all contributed this rise in prevalence. Anxiety is frequently present among other issues such as addictions, phobias, obsessive behaviour, insomnia and mild depression, and is generally treated before targeting traits specific to these issues. It is also common that anxiety symptoms can go unnoticed. When some people begin to feel anxious, they substitute these feelings with unhealthy avoidance behaviours such as eating, drinking, smoking, etc. Effects of AnxietyThe longer anxiety is left untreated, the greater the consequences.
Anxiety is fear of 'what if'. The more we overthink the future, of what might be, the more our thoughts go unchecked and the less likely we are to do anything about them. The longer this internal process goes on, the more likely our external world will be effected. Our relationships may suffer, our ability to work will be impeded, and we may begin to avoid the things that once gave us pleasure. If you have difficulty concentrating, feel the presence of your heart without physical exertion, or feel your mind racing, you may be running anxiety. Other physical symptoms can also develop, including high blood pressure, difficulty sleeping, panic attacks and headaches, among others. Prolonged anxiety is also a precursor to depression later in life. |
Treating AnxietyWhile every client presents differently, most people demonstrate a similar pattern of traits that makes coping with anxiety harder. These traits may differ in severity, but generally include:
The difference between a person who manages daily stressors and a person who runs anxiety is a skills gap.
The good news is that skills can be learned, and the key to overcoming anxiety involves training the mind to use learned skills in a variety of applications. Using hypnotherapy and strategic psychotherapy, we can teach you how to manage your thoughts and feelings, when to analyse and when to act, how to assess risk, and how to allow yourself to 'switch on and off' between situations. Types of AnxietyThere is a dangerous idea that some people are just 'anxious' people, or that they are anxious all the time.
This is not true. We can be anxious in some situations and not anxious in others. Some people respond less effectively to more situations compared to others. Some find they run anxiety in social situations, others find they do it at the workplace, and others run anxiety when competing in sport. In any situation where the future is uncertain, feelings of anxiousness and worry are bound to pop up. |
